Zumwalt Poems Online

Zumwalt

One of the pioneer (some say lost in the wilderness) poets of the information age.

Sometimes labeled a “non-poet”, “anti-poet”, or non-poet’s poet, Zumwalt continues today to write without the least consideration of the educated opinions of “those in the know.” In Zumwalt’s words, “a poem is a piece of information, it is not knowledge and it is not, intrinsically, of value” and “what anyone makes of a poem is always much more relevant and meaningful than what any poem is made of. The real artist and creative force is the reader, not the poet.”

This is our attempt to distribute those works permissioned by Zumwalt for distribution.

Zumwalt was first published in 1973, in the now defunct Good Humor Literary Magazine. It is our pleasure to be able to include this landmark poem, “Trilogy of the Oblique Carbide”, on this website along with a few poems published in 1974 and 1975 as well as many, many more Zumwalt poems written after 1973.

With a few exceptions, the poems published here are the only poems of Zumwalt ever presented online. All poems posted here are done so with the permission of the author. This is not the case with any other Zumwalt poems available online.

Distribution of this content is not permitted without written authorization of author. All works contained within are copyrighted by the author.   Titles for blog post series, including “Fifty Year Friday”, “Thoughtful Thursday”, “Musical Monday”, “Century Sunday”, and “Seventy Year Saturday” are also copyrighted.

  6. There is something familiar but fresh about every word I read here. I connect to Zumwalt’s poetry, and I like to visit this blog every once in a while. It’s like a “text” for me. There is plenty of old stuff I will get around to reading eventually… and often something new that draws me in and reminds me of the joy of serendipitous discovery.

  7. I must agree completely, Poetry is not about education, but rather opinion, view, and inspiration. It is not about How it is written that matters, it is about How it is read and felt. I look forward to exploring this site. 🙂

Thank you for giving me a new way to look at poetry.

“The most important requirement of any poem is that it ends before the reader goes on to something else.”

Love this. And, oh so true.
